Local Motive Mobile Farmers Market
The Local Motive Mobile Farmers Market supports residents of food insecure neighborhoods in accessing fresh, healthy and local foods. Through an ongoing partnership between Feast Down East and Wilmington Housing Authority, the Local Motive Mobile Farmers is able to offer year-round, weekly pop-up farmers markets in a total of ten public housing neighborhoods and at various community events and institutions. Selling locally sourced foods grown and raised from over 50 farmers in a 50-mile radius through the Feast Down East Food Hub in Burgaw, NC!
Operating out of a refrigerated Ford transit van, the program is designed to address increasing food insecurity and access towards healthy, nutrient-dense foods among low-income populations. The Local Motive Mobile Farmers Market distributes a portion of the grocery store with seasonally-based produce items throughout the year. The mobile farmers market operation accepts SNAP/EBT or food stamps, debit and cash as forms of payment. In addition to participating in the Fresh Bucks program for SNAP/EBT customers, for each dollar a SNAP recipient withdraws from their account to spend on their purchase, they will be matched an additional dollar, for up to a total of $20 Fresh Bucks. The Local Motive Mobile Farmers Market additionally offers educational resources and health-based education for healthy practices through collaborations with the Health Department, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, the Cooperative Extension and UNCW.
