Feast Down East is pleased to announce the appointment of our new Executive Director, Sarah Daniels. She has served as Associate Director since September 2015 and has been involved with the organization in various capacities since 2013. She holds a Masters of Public Administration in Nonprofit Management and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from UNC Wilmington, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from the University of Georgia. Sarah succeeds Jane Steigerwald, who recently retired after being with the organization for eight years, including the past two as Executive Director.
Sarah moved to Wilmington in 2009 with her husband, Daniel Buffington, a faculty member at UNCW, and returned to school to pursue an interest in international development. However, she soon learned about Feast Down East and the persistent issues right here in southeastern North Carolina around poverty, food insecurity, and the decline of small-scale family farms. While earning her degree in Public Administration, Sarah shifted her focus to the role of nonprofit organizations in local food systems development and the work of Feast Down East, in particular. In addition to these academic pursuits, she got involved in the local food movement through volunteerism and started on the path of becoming a “locavore” by sourcing from area farms and fisheries whenever possible. Regarding her appointment to the Executive Director position Sarah says, “it is an amazing gift to be working for an organization that reflects my personal commitment to promoting social and economic justice through local food systems.”
Outside of Feast Down East, Sarah can be found working in her home vegetable garden, doing Muay Thai kickboxing, or performing as a classical violist. Here are some pictures of her garden, where she appreciates getting a small glimpse into the trials and joys of our farmers.
