COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA)
CSA programs offer a unique form of cooperation between farmers and their community. The details of each CSA depends on the farm, but generally customers pay an up-front subscription fee to the farm in return for a weekly box of assorted fresh produce. Farmers use the collected fees to purchase the supplies necessary to grow the crops to fill subscriptions. CSAs are popular because they directly support growers while providing a fun way to explore the wide variety of local foods.
Our local farmers are facing uncertain times as a result of the social distancing protocols in place. When local restaurants close their doors to customers, orders from farms dwindle. Feast Down East, in its commitment to support our local farmers has developed a Farm to Fork Program or a CSA. This program will allow you to purchase a variety of local farm fresh products in one box with a weekly pick up.
All of the products sourced for the boxes are grown within a 50 mile radius of Burgaw, NC so you know you are getting the freshest food possible. Also, while COVID-19 is not likely to travel to your respiratory system from your digestive tract, the more hands that touch our food and the packaging, the higher the risk. Our boxes will have gone from the farmer to a few folks in our office boxing them up, to you. It doesn't get more direct than that!
Order a box and pickup at Seagate Baptist Church (6115 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, NC) on Friday between 4-6pm. Follow the cones to drive up to our box truck, provide your name, and we will load the box right into your car with minimal interaction.
If you want to pick up in Burgaw at our Food Hub (115 S. Dickerson St., Burgaw, NC), please call/text Brendon at 910-524-0128 by Wednesday of each week.
We will be filling the boxes with a different mix every week from the following farms:
- Cottle Organics – Rose Hill
- Red Beard Farms – Willard
- Black River Organic Farm – Ivanhoe
- Jackson Farm – Godwin
- Britt Farm – Mount Olive
- Sarge’s Farm – Currie
- Windmill Farm – Rocky Point
- Shelton Herb Farm – Leland
- The Wilmington Mushroom Company - Wilmington
Items you might see in our boxes this Spring as they come into season: strawberries, asparagus, kale, turnips, radishes, kohlrabi, garlic leeks, sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, bok choy, arugula, mushrooms and salad mix.
We have offered weekly CSA boxes for four months now, and we are grateful for the support within our community. The boxes have been an excellent way to support our local farmers, especially during a time when their usual form of income from restaurants was slow or non-existent. The CSA program has also helped us connect with our community in a different way and spread the word about our organization. Thank you for sharing the boxes with your friends and family and thank you for all of your support!
Quality is of the utmost importance for our CSA boxes. We never want to provide our customers with anything that is not up to our standards. Our farmers strive to vary the produce they provide to us each week in an effort for our boxes to be as versatile as possible. However, with the weather getting hotter each day, product availability is limited and many farmers are working to transition their crops for the fall season.
With this in mind, we have decided to put a pause on our weekly CSA boxes until the beginning of September. As of now, Feast Down East does not feel like we can give you the value you expect from our organization and products. In the meantime, we are updating our system to make purchasing boxes easier for our customers. With this new system we will be able to meet more of our customer’s needs and expand our product availability.
To make the CSA program as beneficial to our community as possible, we are asking our customers to complete a survey. The survey will be coming in the next couple of weeks, and we encourage anyone who has purchased with us in the past to complete it. Your feedback is important to us and we value your input!
To continue to support Feast Down East and our farmers during this time, you may visit the Local Motive Mobile Farmers Market on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please visit their page for each month’s schedule.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. We are excited to continue our Farm to Fork CSA program later this year, and we hope you will purchase with us in September!
