Food hub DistributionThe Feast Down East Food Hub is a USDA-designated, GAP certified processing and distribution center for local agricultural food products. Its purpose is to ease the burden on small to medium size farms in Southeastern North Carolina to market, process and distribute their products. The food hub is located at the Historic Train Depot in Burgaw and is equipped with value-added processing equipment, including flash-freezer and refrigeration storage. Weekly farmers from within a 50 mile radius bring their produce, dairy, meat and other food items to the food hub where it is aggregated and transported to wholesale buyers in the Wilmington area, including restaurants, grocers and institutions. Like all Feast Down East programs, the food hub is a not-for-profit service that relies on the generosity of donors and grantors.

The Feast Down East Food Hub also connects farmers directly to area chefs, helping to nurture the business relationships and collaborative partnerships between them. Restaurants can gain the endorsement of Feast Down East for their commitment to sourcing local products.
The food hub also helps institutional buyers promote and easily access local food. These include schools, retirement communities, companies with dining facilities, health care facilities and others. In partnership with Feast Down East, UNCW Campus Dining has become a leader on the farm-to-university front. |
