A Word From Our Food Hub Coordinator

FDE Blog 2025 October Tessa

October 12th is National Farmers’ Day. This day celebrates the hard work that farmers put in to make sure that our communities are fed. These amazing individuals have risen up to the increasingly challenging job of cultivating the land for the benefit of all of us. We appreciate all the sacrifices and effort that every single farmer puts in, day in and day out, to provide nourishment for us.

National Farmer’s Day was first recognized as a federal holiday in 1970. However, the recognition and celebration of farmers has been happening in October since the 1800s, which historically, has been the typical time of the culmination of the harvest of crops in autumn, before season extension technology took root!

This day is important, because it is necessary to not only shine a light on this vital work, but to also make sure that each and every farmer that works the land knows how valued they are.

We could not do the work that we do here at Feast Down East without our local farmers. They work tirelessly in the heat, cold, blazing sun, rain and sometimes even snow to get their orders to us for our customers. For that, we are extremely grateful and appreciative. We have cultivated a strong community of farmers and producers throughout eastern North Carolina that we are fortunate to work with every week to provide produce, meat, eggs, and value added products to our many customers These customers include Local Motive- our very own mobile market, restaurants, grocers, food relief agency partners as well as our CSA program. The products that our farmers provide make their way to Wilmington, Burgaw and surrounding areas- they have a large reach!

Don’t forget to thank a farmer for all that they do. Support your local food system and the farmers that keep it growing.

We want to express our gratitude to all farmers, but especially those that we have worked with this year:
