A Word from our Food Hub Programs Coordinator
The summer season is upon us in Eastern North Carolina and with it comes our Summer CSA! CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a weekly subscription that allows you to enjoy fresh, delicious produce while supporting your local farmers. Our CSA boxes are delivered each Thursday to locations around Wilmington, Leland, Burgaw, and now Surf City. Subscribers have the option to choose a 6 week or 10 week CSA, as well as a full or a half share. The full share brings 6-8 seasonal products per week and is better suited to families or those who cook often. The half share brings 3-5 products and is good for couples, individuals, or those interested in trying out CSA with a smaller commitment. Each season brings a different variety of produce but you can check out the CSA page on our website for photos of past boxes.
In the summer season you can look forward to blueberries, blackberries, peaches, corn, summer squashes, tomatoes, cucumbers, all kinds of peppers and much more! Here in Eastern NC, we are lucky to have such a great variety of local produce, particularly in the summer season. Each week we send an email letting you know which farm each item in the box comes from as well as a link to the farm's Meet Your Producer page, which includes a bio and the growing practices of the farmers. Connecting people to where their food comes from and the people who grow it is a huge part of our CSA mission. When you choose to buy local you are supporting your neighbors and helping to build a more resilient local food system!
We also include recipes to give you some inspiration for how to use the assortment of ingredients in your
box! The CSA boxes occasionally have unfamiliar produce, which serves as a great way to expand your vegetable horizons! Subscribers also have the option to purchase weekly add-ons, such as local meat, eggs, goat cheese, or honey, for their box.
Since its beginning, our CSA program has helped people throughout Eastern NC gain access to fresh produce, support their local farmers, and strengthen their local food system. As the program grows, we hope to continue to keep bridging the gap between the food we consume as a community and the people that grow it. If you have any questions about embarking on this journey with us please don't hesitate to reach out.
