Blog May 2026 From Food Hub Manager
Howdy & Happy May!
Named after the Roman goddess Maia, May is representative of fertility and growth and this is abundantly displayed among the landscape of the spring season. The air is sweet with the scent of honeysuckle, the days are hot, and the nights are chilly. In North Carolina we are graced with a bounty of crops ranging from strawberries to asparagus and everything in between. Up at the Food Hub we’re wrapping up the spring round of our CSA and waiting for the arrival of sun ripened blackberries.
You may have noticed that this spring was a bit drier than usual. 2026 is currently the fifth driest March on record (since 1895) for North Carolina (drought.gov). Inconsistent rainfall and abnormal seasonal temperatures can be a major obstacle for farmers. Navigating these environmental challenges on top of rising gas prices can be a lot to balance with an already demanding profession. With all of the beauty of spring it is easy to forget to consider the amount of resources, time, and labor that goes into the production of food. Every time you eat, remember to thank a farmer!
There are a few special days to celebrate this month including Mothers Day and World Bee Day. This Mother’s Day let's all take a moment to cherish and respect our one shared mother, Mother Earth. Let's also be thankful for our pollinators for all the hard work they do to keep us nourished. Make sure to stop by the Mobile Market this May to pick up some local honey this month!
